I still have the lighter , a piece of rolled up paper and the string with hook in my inventory. I think I've found 8 birds. Found the guy in chains and I have all but one of the puzzle pieces in place. Also found the column that shows that all but one of the puzzle pieces are found.

Anybody further than this. I don't know where to get the last piece.

Oh, I also found a mask face that when you click on it's necklace it's mouth opens for a moment. Tried to put all of my remaining inventory in the mouth, but, that did nothing.

Anybody have a clue at this point?

I think that we're at the same point, Michelle.
As mentioned in my above post, I tried to use piece of paper, but it doesn't work. So I might be wrong.

This one is a bit tricky. I hate not finishing but I am so stuck. Tab most definitely helps in this game. I wonder if there is a walkthough on Matuesz site. I'll have to go and check....

You're on the right track. The trick is

Darn! I got out, but I never finished the "secret puzzle." Unless you've found all the birds, don't cross the bridge!

Well, I tried at least 40 times, but nothing yet
I can drag the paper, but not release it. Tried fast, slowly etc.

I'm not sure if I've found all the birds or not.

It really doesn't work for me, I tried meanwhile at least 80 times, I can't release the roll of paper.

OMG, after 100 tries, it worked finally!!!

Now, the dots show that I've found 8 birds.... Still missing 2.

On his site Murtaugh says his evil twin created this and so it's incredibly hard.

You can see how many birds you've found by looking at the pillar next to the mask dude. (Never did figure out his purpose.)

For the birds:

Look up (everywhere). Tab key is useful. Also, there's one you can't see until you lower the bridge.

I redid it, got all 10 birds, let the little guy loose. Good game!

I've found one more,

on the screen before you get to the machine, look up, click window on right

but not the 10th. Ah well.... didn't solve the secret puzzle.

I already found the one by clicking on the left side of the rail by the bridge. It's around the corner. I found all but one. Crossed the bridge. I'll try again later and see if I can find them all and free the little guy.

Walkthrough

Really awesome game!!! I finally finished it with some help from all the posts...Here's a walkthrough for anyone wishing to have it...

Zoom in on the well, get hook on the ground on the left side, take small coin off the ledge of the well
go back

on the ground in front of the well is a stone, click on it
on the upper left side of the screen is a string, take it and then click on the right side of the stone near the back of it to get a key
go back twice to the main screen

in the lower left corner of the screen, click on the ledge to see a bird

there are ten birds to find, and once you've found them all, you can free a prisoner locked away in a room

combine the string and the hook, use it on the sewer to get a puzzle piece

there are seven puzzle pieces to find, once you have them all, you can make the machine work that lowers the bridge later in the game!

back in the main screen, click on the open area at the top that says "The sky", on the building to the right, click on the area where the chimney comes up off the roof to see a bird

BE CAREFUL, if you click too low, you will go back to the main screen instead of seeing the bird!

go back to the main screen and click on the door to the book house, there is a small hole in the wall, click on it to get the lighter, then enter the book house

go into the elevator, click on the control panel and go to -3 basement floor, turn around and go to the "scary" place to pick up a plate

go back to the elevator and go up to 1 reading room floor

click on the second picture hanging on the wall, click on the line that is coming up out of the roof on the picture, you will zoom in and see a bird, go back and then click on the left side of the picture to find a piece of rolled up paper behind the picture
go back and click on the wall to the right to go into the reading area, get book off the table on the left

go back to the elevator, and go down to -1 archives floor, go to the right and find the book on the fourth shelf that has a dot on the side, click on it to see another bird

go back to the elevator and go to -2 workshop floor, go to the right where you will see a table with a rock and a pair of scissors...click on the rock and then QUICKLY put the rolled up piece of paper under it so that the rock splits when it comes down on the paper...this may take a few tries! You will get another puzzle piece when you've done it right!

on this same floor, there is a puzzle on the wall next to the elevator, the combination to solve this puzzle is in a picture in the armory, so you can either go to the armory to find the combination, or just simply move the arrows in the puzzle to look like this:

once the puzzle is done, you will get another puzzle piece

go back to the elevator and go to the main floor and then exit to the main screen, click on the door to the armory put the plate in the hole on the wall to the left of the armory door

go inside the armory, click on the spot on the side of the stairs, open the doors and get a screwdriver, click on the picture on the wall in the armory and note that the buttons are in a strange pattern, zoom in and get the pattern to use on the wall on floor -2 of the book house

go up the stairs and get the puzzle piece on the column and the piece of cloth that is on the floor

go back downstairs and enter the office

the scary guy will duck behind a wall when you go in the office

click on the upper right corner of the office and you will see an opening, click on the opening to see another bird

go back and leave the office, head into the torture room

the scary guy will be in there! don't be afraid!

go around the corner to the left, give the book to the scary guy and he will drop a puzzle piece
click on the sink and run your mouse over the spiders, then use the hook on the string to get a key out of the sink

leave the armory and go back to the main screen, take the cloth you found in the armory and combine it with the screwdriver to make a torch, click on the opening to the passage and zoom in on the bars, put the torch in the hole and light it with the lighter, give the small coin from the well to the little guy, he will give you a puzzle piece

go back to the main screen and if you haven't already done the puzzle on floor -2 of the book house to get the puzzle piece, enter the book house, go to floor -2 and turn the knobs on the wall to match the pattern of the buttons on the picture from the armory to get the puzzle piece

back in the main screen, go into city hall, enter the second office on the right and use the key you got from the sink

on the safe that's on the floor to the right of the desk, get another puzzle piece

exit that room and go into the last office on the left, click on the upper right corner of the room to look up, click on the bird's nest to see another bird

go back out into the hallway, click on the beam across the ceiling, you will see three large beams and then some smaller ones, click in between the two bottom smaller beams, closer to the left side where there is a shadow to see another bird

go back to the hallway and click the end of the hallway, follow the scary guy to the right, go along the path and then put the puzzle pieces that match the openings in place

there are four places, one is already done, so you will use three puzzle pieces on this side

once you put the puzzle pieces in place, press the circle on the blocks to make the tower things go down,

go back twice and then go around to the left, follow the path to another set of puzzle towers, put the remaining puzzle pieces in place and press the circles on the towers

go to the right and click on the wall above the window in the wall, click on the circle on the right to see another bird

go to the right again, click on the railing around the balcony on the left hand side next to the wall to see another bird...NOTE...If you put the bridge down now and cross the bridge at this point, you will not have completed all of the puzzles!!!

go back until you are standing outside city hall, go to the left and the scary guy will be off to the right...follow him and go up the stairs, use the yardstone key on the door, go inside and look out the window to the tree, this spot is VERY SMALL and hard to find, but there is a bird in the tree, he's more to the left side of the tree...

click on the prisoner, he will tell you he can't get out because of the chains, note the picture on the wall that shows a bird laying an egg...go back outside and down the stairs, at the bottom of the stairs, go to the left...click in the small corner to the left and you will see a tower with an egg on it, get the egg, take it back up to the prisoner and give it to him...HE'S FREE!!!

go back to city hall, go inside and to the end of the hallway, go left and follow the path to the machine, pull the lever, the bridge goes down, cross the bridge and you're free!
