That's what I was thinking already - that the keyword given connects you to two different words that make up the primary and secondary key for this type of cipher. It's just working out what that connection is, as I only know that keyword in one sense, and that appears not to be the right one. Using the very word given, or that word split into two doesn't give meaningful results either.

        • yeah ... i tried to split as well ... just trying something else

          • nope ... that didnt work, ... tried using G*** as the key and F***** as the keyword

            • I tried the splits in every possible combination. I also tried one forward and one backward too. I'm still no further.

                  • I tried anagraming G********* but there were way too many results for it to be the solution. Back to the drawing board.

                    • Nobody has found a program for decoding this type of cipher have they. It would increase the speed of testing potential theories if so.

                        • I thought I had, but it turned out not to be implemented in that release. I was actually on the verge of writing one about an hour ago, but had an attack of laziness

                          • I just found this one:

Seems to have dozens ciphers built into it and it is a free java applet. Might help some.

                            • I've been using that so far, but this applet doesn't handlethis cipher type in the way you'd think it does - it uses 0-4 rather than 1-5 for a start, which throws everything out. It frequently doesn't give you a result at all in this case.

EDIT: there's a switch for 1-5, but that whole module still seems unstable.

Ah well, bedtime for me. I shall sleep on it and try again tomorrow. Good luck folks

                              • It works, I made my own cipher and it decoded it. It does however lock up if the keyword used produces impossible to decode numbers (ie 30 56 00 etc)
