Hmm....Well Missouri wasn't the desert... But I think I might research it. It was about 5 years ago now...and I've not seen one since. (Though I haven't been in the Missouri countryside again.

@Funja....Don't get creeped out...but there are tarantulas in California and Missouri. And it appears that's what I saw that day.
