My condolence for this tragical event, I'm very sorry to hear that. And I can imagine how bad your friend feels right now.
As Crimson and jack have already mentioned, in such cases words often cannot help, or even make it worse. We tend to try to make our friends who are suffering to feel better, and cheer them up, but this is not what they need. It is very important to be there, to listen, to hug, to hold hands and cry together etc. - just what you both feel like. This often helps much more than words.
And I also tend to say that in this case a professional counseling might be a good idea - but don't put pressure on your friend with this either.
And hopefully there are also other persons apart from you who care, and who will listen and be there.
