Well, maybe that box hint is only related to box-ciphers, and bifid and four-square are that type of ciphers I think. So probably we already have the info that the box-hint was trying to give us, and we may need something moreOriginally posted by enderI read the message again ! and satyr tells us ' and remember to think around the box'
It looks like a hint or something!!!
what do you think of it?

That's exactly what i thought. I tried this doing well beforehand and thought to myself that this can't be right, anything (obviously in this case squares) multiplied by 4 implies having an even number of characters, and so i tried the bifid and trifid ciphers without success because i didn't know the keyword.Originally posted by KuangJust a thought - doesn't foursquare require the ciphertext to be an even number of characters long? This one is 65, which would suggest bifid or trifid, and therefore a single key.

Yes, you are right. I went through that page again and it sais "to encipher... a random letter must be appended" if the number of letters is odd.Originally posted by KuangWould it be appended by the creator or the receiver though? If the former, it should already have been even.
So the ciphertext must always be even, as it seems.
It's good news, because a bifid-cipher online decoder is available at: http://www.apprendre-en-ligne.net/cr...elastelle.html
but we still need the keyword

in this page of the link you can choose vertical or horizontal construction.

The applet on that french page seems to be coming out with nonsense - examine the grille and the results for yourself and see what I mean. It may just be that I can't read french and so don't understand the nature of the applet fully, but it looks conclusively screwed from here
The second link isn't for a bifid cipher as far as I can tell.

Well, the applet works allright for me... you have to type the ciphertext in the last box (labeled message chiffr?), and the plaintext should appear in the first one (message clair). Of course, only when having the "clef" (keyword).Originally posted by KuangThe applet on that french page seems to be coming out with nonsense - examine the grille and the results for yourself and see what I mean. Try the example given in the page: EETDY TYDBQ RUDEB SRRGE ESMDL PJNPL AEAAR EIEYG APCUB MMTXJ TLZQX LVIOY LITER IJECO IZZFF, with the keyword "recueillement", and see that it works, even if the plaintext will be in french.
The grille changes with every keyword, of course.
And yes, I agree, the second link from ender does not seem to be about a bifid cipher

Well, that's bad news. We'll have to try them both, but only when we find the keyword. What link is that second applet?Originally posted by KuangActually, scratch that - I've realised I was reading it wrong
Having said that I've found another applet that gives completely different results for the same settings, sooo....
