Kuang, I took bifid as the one we have to use because Cryptos confirmation about unm.a came after a post where I was assuming the use of bifid. Anymay, it can only be bifid, trifid or four-square. I would discard four-square, because it needs two keywords, but trifid may deserve a try. Guess it will probably have more variations, but we'll see.
About the bifid's variations, I think we have only seen them in the CipherClerk applet, right? Wiki does not describe any, neither does the french applet. Have you found a page that describes the multiple variants?

Yes, but there are more double letters used in bifid: v/w (there are no w's in the ciphertext, either), k/q, u/v... and the pairs of coordinates can be rearranged upwards, downwards, horizontally (?), and ciphertext arranged in blocks or not... enough to make me go nuts. Only vague references along with some new versions that people have come up with for themselves, but Cryptos posted earlier that there are different variants and only one will give a result that makes sense.
