Kuang, I took bifid as the one we have to use because Cryptos confirmation about unm.a came after a post where I was assuming the use of bifid. Anymay, it can only be bifid, trifid or four-square. I would discard four-square, because it needs two keywords, but trifid may deserve a try. Guess it will probably have more variations, but we'll see.
About the bifid's variations, I think we have only seen them in the CipherClerk applet, right? Wiki does not describe any, neither does the french applet. Have you found a page that describes the multiple variants?
Jase: junkbox permanently checked, definitely my confirmation e-mail is along with our private investigator, waiting for me to take the cab

Yes, but there are more double letters used in bifid: v/w (there are no w's in the ciphertext, either), k/q, u/v... and the pairs of coordinates can be rearranged upwards, downwards, horizontally (?), and ciphertext arranged in blocks or not... enough to make me go nuts. Have a look at this applet: http://members.aon.at/cipherclerk/CipherClerk.htmlOriginally posted by Jaselol cunn ... and at the variations, i assumed that because there are no J's in the cipher and wiki doesnt use them in the example, then that is what we use, i/j

Only vague references along with some new versions that people have come up with for themselves, but Cryptos posted earlier that there are different variants and only one will give a result that makes sense.Originally posted by CunnAbout the bifid's variations, I think we have only seen them in the CipherClerk applet, right?
